Teen Surfer Bethany Survives Shark Attack,
Returns to Surf with Unbreakable Spirit
Reported by George Fleming, November 30, 2003, Kauai, Hawaii
Thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton, a passionate surfer from Kauai, survived a shark attack that left her without her left arm. The incident occurred during a morning surf session with her friend Alana and others from the surf team. The attack happened in a split second while Bethany rested on her surfboard with her left arm in the water. Suddenly, a 15-foot tiger shark bit through her board and her arm. “I felt pressure and a couple of quick tugs, but no pain at first,” Bethany recalled. Her companions acted quickly; Holt used his rash guard as a tourniquet and guided Bethany safely to shore, preventing severe blood loss and saving her life.
After undergoing surgery to stabilise her condition, Bethany remained uncertain if she would ever surf again. At first, she thought of turning to surf photography. By her second day in the hospital, with encouragement from her family, Bethany began to think about returning to the waves. In a stunning comeback, Bethany resumed surfing only weeks after the attack. Her father’s encouragement was unwavering. “Bethany, I am sure you can do whatever you put your mind to,” he said, proud of her resilience. Since the incident, Bethany has become a symbol of hope. Strangers approach her daily to express their admiration. “You’re something more now than a surfer,” a friend told her, recognising the inspiration she’s brought to countless people.
Bethany’s resolve to pursue her dreams despite the odds has made waves worldwide. Reflecting on her first successful surf since the attack, she said, “The tiny bit of doubt that told me, ‘You’ll never surf again’ was gone in one wave.”
Bethany Hamilton’s story serves as a reminder that courage and determination can overcome any obstacle, inspiring everyone who faces adversity.
