Answer: Yes, I like the character  Ivan.
Polya’s husband was a simple peasant. But later he became a government official. He tried hard to make his wife a literate woman. But she was not ready to do it. He was a busy man. So he didn’t try to argue with his wife. But he was a very supportive and loving husband. 4. In the story ‘Polya’, Polya found a letter in Ivan’s jacket. She was illiterate and could not read the letter. She felt sorry. ‘Even though it is somebody else’s letter,’ she thought, ‘I have got to know what is in it. May be it will change my whole life. May be Ivan loves another woman. May be I will have to go back to the country and work as a peasant.’
The above paragraph reveals Polya’s character.
Prepare the character sketch of Polya.
Answer: Polya was an innocent woman. Though she was illiterate, she was intelligent and sensible. That’s why she decided to learn to read and write instead of seeking help from others to know the content of the letter. She was clever and determined too. She told her husband that she was fed up with being an ignorant and so she wanted to be a literate. When she decided to learn, she learnt well.
This shows her determination. She was very sensitive. We can know it from her response when she saw the letter addressed to her husband. She loved her husband very much.
She became upset when she saw the letter and she cried bitterly. She was ambitious also. She wanted to know the content of the letter by reading it herself. So she took the effort to learn to read and write. In short, she was a good typical village wife.
